Meet The Team
Pete Ward - Managing Director
What name/nickname do you prefer to be called?
Everyone knows me as Pete and from experience people only add an “R” onto the end if I am in trouble, so Pete is fine thanks!
What do you enjoy about the work you do?
As a company we are big enough to compete yet not so big that we have lost the personal touch.
My job is all about the people. Be it encouraging and developing our staff or gaining trust and looking after our customers. We have some great staff who help us achieve this and some great customers it is a pleasure to work with. I’ll struggle to tire of either.
If you could write your own job title that best describes what you do here, what would it be?
In my early career I worked in finance which didn’t suit me as it was about calculating and documenting the events in a business without the real involvement.
Later through my passion for caving I moved into Rope Access and loved the hands on aspects, but missed seeing how it translated into business performance.
My current role marries trades that I understand and love – especially work at height and training – with responsibility for the performance and direction of the business.
If that wasn’t enough I also get a great team of people who help me.
What are your hobbies?
My great passion is Caving and especially exploration, but as time and age restrict me I can often be seen out cycling, walking or running up a mountain instead of investigating its inner depths.
What volunteering or passion projects do you do outside of work?
Over the years I have introduced a lot of younger people to outdoor activities like Caving many of whom thrive on the adventure and gain hobbies for life. More recently I have introduced my daughter to caving along with her cousins and our friends children who have created their own small caving group. All seem to enjoy the excitement and camaraderie with a few having progressed to using rope techniques, so maybe there is a potential rope worker in there somewhere.
Pete is always happy to invite customers to SpanSet. Technical Days have been regular events where customers can come along to meet our experienced team and find solutions to issues through a series of lively demonstrations. Quite often there will be the chance to 'have a go' at an activity, such as putting on a harness and experiencing an activity at height.
