Types of Shackles and Their Uses

When working at heights, every second and decision made can be the difference between safety and accidents. That’s why using the right equipment is crucial, and one of the essential tools is the shackle.

Although small in size, shackles play a vital role in rigging and lifting operations. They are used to connect slings (such as wire ropes or webbing slings) to hooks or lifting devices, ensuring that the load is lifted securely and stably.

Types of Shackles

types of shackle

There are various types of shackles, each with its own function. Let's take a closer look!

1. D Shackle (Dee Shackle)

The D Shackle, also known as the Dee Shackle, is one of the most commonly used shackles in lifting and rigging operations. It has a D-shaped design with an opening in the middle and a locking mechanism at the mouth.

The locking mechanism on a D shackle can be in the form of a screw pin, clevis pin, or even a bolt and nut for extra security.

D shackles are ideal when lifting heavy loads in a straight-line direction. Their shape helps keep the chain or sling stable, preventing movement or swaying during use.

Measuring a D-Shackle
To ensure proper selection, consider the following:

  • Pin Diameter – Measure the diameter of the pin to ensure compatibility with the sling.
  • Shackle Length – Measure from end to end to determine the total length.
  • Bowing Thickness – Ensure the bow is thick enough to withstand the expected load.

2. Bow Shackle (Anchor Shackle)

The Bow Shackle has a shape similar to the Greek Omega (Ω) and is commonly used for wire ropes or webbing slings. It can also accommodate multiple slings at once.

Key Advantages:
The curved design allows the load to move freely without getting stuck in a specific position.
It provides more flexibility than D Shackles, although its lifting capacity may be slightly lower.

Bow shackles come in two main variations:

  • Standard Body – The most common type, used for connecting and securing ropes or wire ropes.
  • Wide Body – Designed for larger slings or ropes, with a wider opening to prevent bending or damage.

3. Screw Pin Shackle

The Screw Pin Shackle is a U-shaped connector featuring a removable pin that can be screwed in or out for easy attachment and removal.

Key Benefits:

  • Lightweight and easy to carry.
  • Quick to install and remove.

However, because it lacks an additional locking system, there is a risk of the pin loosening if not secured properly. It is not recommended for lifting extremely heavy loads.

4. Round Pin Shackle

The Round Pin Shackle features a cylindrical locking pin, providing enhanced security compared to screw pin shackles. The locking pin at the end prevents it from coming loose accidentally.

5. Bolt & Nut Shackle

The Bolt & Nut Shackle has a U-shaped body similar to other shackles but features a bolt-like pin secured with a nut and cotter pin.

Why Choose Bolt & Nut Shackles?
Extra Security – The nut and bolt combination prevents accidental disassembly.
Ideal for Permanent Applications – Recommended when the connection does not need frequent removal.

Shackles Are Essential – But So Is PPE!

Shackles are indispensable for lifting and rigging, but don’t forget that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is just as crucial! When working at heights, always wear the proper safety gear to minimize risks.
